Last night, Alex bought a new fancy TV. It's very nice and I'm sure he got a decent price for it.

He asked me for advice on it, but it's a hard thing for me to give advice on for two reasons:

  1. I don't care about TV. A small, slightly staticy picture is still fine for the amount that I watch. I know that this is NOT ok for the addicted TV watchers of the world. It would hurt their eyesight.

  2. I don't know his finances. I don't know how much he owes, how much he has, what else he wants to buy.

So, no flowers or card for your anniversary but a brand spankin' new TV for him???? Shame on him!

Interesting that you don't know about his finances. I'm kinda surprised, what with you being all clever and budget conscious. Sorry to sound all preachy and annoying here, but you wouldn't go into business with someone whose finances you didn't know so why would you enter into a serious relationship - not to mention a financial investment - with someone without knowing the same thing. I always believe that people treat money the same way they treat other people. Just a thought.

ummmm .... I LOVE a decent TV picture but then I do fine with my 1970s one for now. Odd timing. I guess I have to "hear, hear" the thoughts of Stuffinhead.

First of all, I really don't care about the anniversary thing. I did nothing for it, just as he did. I didn't even THINK about getting anything for him.

So I really don't mind about it. I didn't expect anything.

The TV? Well, he DID ask my opinion and I told him that it was hard for me to help him out with that decision because of the reasons outlined above.

But he DID ask.

And, his point is that he doesn't want to buy a crappy TV now and then just throw it away when "we" (read: he) want a better one. I agree with that.

The timing issue isn't really an issue for him. Money is not tight for him now, compared to any other time. What has he really got to spend it on?

He's SAVING money by living with me right now.

I do see the point about getting into business with someone whose finances are a mystery.

While they're not a total mystery, I agree that we could be better on that point.

The only advice I gave was: "If you can afford to make those payments, then go for the TV you want. However, I don't know how much you can afford."

He didn't elaborate except to say that he can afford $35/month in payments.

And that was the end of it.

Holy shit you are defensive.

I don't really understand why, when I explain my position on something better that it's considered being super defensive.

I don't really deny being defensive in general, I suppose, but I'm really curious how one can better explain a position without being accused of being defensive.

Suggestions?
